Big Data Platform:
Enhancing Financial Supervision
with Usability and Efficiency
Financial Supervisory Commission
2023

This project involved designing a new platform to explore how advanced technologies, such as AI and big data, could transform regulatory processes. With no clear initial direction, the challenge was to uncover the client’s needs, define the product’s purpose, and develop a solution that aligned with their goals. As the lead designer, I guided the process from discovery to delivery, ensuring a user-centred approach.

I conducted in-depth UX research, including user interviews and task analysis, to identify pain points and user needs. Using these insights, I developed interactive prototypes, applied interaction design principles to simplify workflows, and created an intuitive and cohesive interface. Multiple rounds of usability testing validated and refined the design, resulting in a significantly improved user experience that made the platform easier to navigate and more efficient to use.

Challenge

The client approached us with an interest in applying advanced technologies, such as AI and big data, to their regulatory work. However, they lacked a clear vision for how these technologies could address their workflows or benefit their users. The goal was to explore potential applications and co-create a product concept that aligned with their needs.

Process

Prototype

1. User Research & Problem Identification

We began by conducting workshops with key stakeholders to understand their current workflows, pain points, and aspirations for the product. Through these discussions, we identified these insights:

  • Inefficient Workflows:
Users struggled with navigating and managing regulatory documents, resulting in time-consuming and error-prone processes.

  • Need for Enhanced Search:
Current systems lacked robust search capabilities, making it difficult to locate relevant regulations and documents efficiently.

  • Document Comparison Challenges:
Stakeholders identified a critical need for tools to compare legal texts and revisions seamlessly.

  • Collaboration Gaps:
Limited mechanisms existed for stakeholders to provide feedback or collaborate on regulatory updates.

  • Opportunity for Innovation:
Research into industry trends highlighted potential for AI-driven features, such as smart search and data insights, to transform workflows.

3. Iterative Prototyping and Testing

I created high-fidelity prototypes using Figma and conducted multiple rounds of testing with both experienced and new users. Feedback was collected on navigation, task efficiency, and overall usability.

Key changes made based on feedback:

• Simplified the main navigation panel to reduce clutter and make core functionalities more accessible.

• Enhanced search result filtering to give users more control over how data is displayed and accessed.

• Added clear, step-by-step guidance for first-time users to minimize the learning curve and improve onboarding.

Solution

The FSC Big Data Intelligent Application Platform now offers:

  • Enhanced Usability:
A simplified layout with intuitive navigation, making it easier for users to access and interact with key features

  • Efficient Search and Filtering:
Advanced search capabilities allow users to locate and filter regulatory data faster, reducing task completion time by 40%

  • Customisable Dashboard:
Users can personalise their workspace, prioritising frequently used tools and information for streamlined workflows

These improvements cater to the diverse needs of stakeholders, ensuring a seamless experience while tackling inefficiencies in regulatory workflows

Significant Outcomes from the Redesign:

  • 40% increase in task efficiency:
Users can complete tasks like searching, comparing regulations, and providing feedback much faster, saving time and effort

  • 30% reduction in user-reported issues:
The streamlined interface and improved functionality reduced common complaints and errors

  • Positive user feedback:
Both experienced and new users praised the platform for its improved ease of use, intuitive layout, and reduced complexity, resulting in higher overall satisfaction

Impact

2.Design Approach

To narrow down the problem based on insights from the research phase, I synthesised findings and identified 3 core focus areas:

  • Streamlined document search

  • Enhanced comparison functionality

  • Improved feedback mechanisms

This IA prioritises a user-centred structure, ensuring users can:

  • Quickly Access Core Features:
The segmentation into “Home” and “Features” reduces cognitive load.

  • Navigate Intuitively:
Clear categories and hierarchical organisation enhance usability.

  • Perform Tasks Efficiently:
Features like “Intelligent Search” and “Feedback Management” are easy to locate and designed to streamline workflows.

Then I created Information Architecture outlines the structural design of the system, focusing on organising content and functionality for intuitive navigation and efficient user interaction. The structure is split into two main sections: Home and Features, ensuring users can easily locate core functionalities.

Existing Product Features and New Opportunities

The images below showcase how the product team envisions incorporating new features into the existing Big Data Intelligent Application Platform. The current design demonstrates the integration of functionalities like advanced search, regulatory linkage, and user feedback systems. While these additions enhance the system’s capabilities, there is an opportunity to refine and redesign the interface for a more intuitive and seamless user experience.

Design Objective:

Through the redesign, I aim to reimagine these features to:

1. Enhance Usability:

Create a cleaner, more intuitive interface that simplifies navigation and interaction.

2. Improve User Flow:

Ensure the user journey is seamless, with fewer steps to complete tasks.

3. Incorporate Modern Design Principles:

Leverage visual hierarchy, responsive design, and accessibility standards to align with user needs.
